From Tree to Taproom: How Our Head Brewer Became Our Resident Lumberjack Craftsman
Rosalie Dear
At No Bucks Given, we don’t just DIY our beer!
Our head brewer, Scott, is the kind of guy who can brew a batch of beer in the morning and frame up a wall by dinnertime. Woodworking isn’t just a hobby for him; it’s another craft he pours his whole heart into. Over the years, he’s built custom doors, cabinets, shutters, shelves, and more. If it can be measured, cut, sanded, or stained, Scott’s probably made it — and made it better than anything you’ll find in a store.

But his most impressive undertaking? Milling his own live-edge slabs straight from the oaks on our property. Scott felled the trees himself, hauled them out of the woods, milled them plank by plank, and transformed them into some of the most beautiful furniture in our home — including our custom live-edge bar. It’s a wonderful feature of our house and a daily reminder of what it means to work with your hands and see a project through.

And that’s really where the lumberjack ties to our brand come from. No Bucks Given isn’t just about brewing bold beer — it’s about doing life boldly. It’s about using the natural resources around us, getting our hands dirty, building instead of buying, and taking pride in the “I made that” moments.
Scott embodies all of that. Whether he’s milling oak slabs or brewing up a hoppy red for our next big event, he approaches every craft with the same grit, creativity, and passion.

So next time you take a sip of a No Bucks brew or spot one of our lumberjack-inspired designs, know this: it’s more than a theme. It’s our lifestyle. It’s our roots — quite literally in the case of those oak trees — and it’s the spirit that fuels everything we do.
Work hard. Play hard. Live free. And whenever possible, do it yourself.
